Alex Fleming has demonstrated over 25 years of innovation and technical leadership managing diverse teams in extreme-environment system designs. He has made seminal contributions to unmanned undersea vehicles, vertical flight aircraft, military jet engines, propulsion and alternative energy systems.
Technology Executive:
As a CTO Chief Technology Officer he has Developed Technical Teams, Strategy, Intellectual Property Portfolio, Proposals, Business Development, JVs, Technology Development, Due Diligence, Execution, Acted as Principal Investigator and Proposal Director for Numerous Grants.
Areas of Expertise:
Advanced Propulsion Systems, Power Takeoffs, Renewable Energy, Energy Storage, Ocean Based System Design, Data Center Infrastructure, Autonomous and Semi Autonomous Robotic Systems.
Highlights:
Pratt & Whitney : Design, built and tested in 12 months the winning Lockheed Martin Variant of the Joint Strike Flight-JSF Engine Vertical Flight Engines
Lockheed Martin: Developed and tested 3 Semi and Fully autonomous unmanned underwater vehicles. Mechanical Lead and Staff Engineer
General Electric: Lead team of 30 Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and Technicians in Homeland Security High Energy Bomb Detection Equipment
Department of Energy : Led 7 DOE Funded Programs as Principal Investigator. Programs ranged from Ocean Current , Wave Energy, Autonomous Robotic Data Collection System, Advanced Drive Trains
Data Centers: Program lead and architect of a Full Scale Subsea Data Center
Funded Activities As Principal Investigator:
Led an R&D team to develop advanced aerospace and computing technologies to enable real-time decisions and operational agility.
Titanium – Electro Winning: Developed novel electro-chemical Titanium process to increase its application in auto, marine and aerospace industries. Quickly formulated a team to execute research and validation including Carnegie Mellon’s Materials Department and Idaho National Lab scientists. Garnered $3.5M funding from ARPA-e for research and validation to bring price parity with stainless steel to achieve vehicle lightening at consequent fuel savings of ~25% on average
Next Generation Drive Train: DOE Award $2.7M - Innovated Wind Turbine/ MHK drivetrain configuration that eliminates the need for gearboxes, power electronics, transformers, and rare earth materials.
Ocean Current: Aquantis-2.5MW Ocean Current Turbine: Developed DOE winning technical proposals. Proposal Director and Principal Investigator of winning $4.15M DOE Advanced Water Power and DOE Marine Hydrokinetic Grant- $4M. Developed teaming and IP arrangements with OEMs, Small Businesses, Universities, FFRDCs, and DOD CRADAS. Developed strategic alliances via JVs. Negotiation team on a $2.1 M Florida Energy Grant. Innovated novel marine drive trains. Led Technical Due Diligence for investment from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries- MHI.
NOAA SBIR1 : Siting for MHK Devices by Means of Self Propulsion Glider.
Wave Energy: Centipod-4.5MW Wave : Developed DOE award wining proposals as principal investigator. Won SBIR I and II ($1M) grants to advance wave power generation. Established teaming arrangements in the UK. DOE Advanced Controls ($650K). $2.5M USD Grant to develop full scale power takeoffs advancing the art of permanent magnet linear generators.
Technology Lab
